Be polite and respectful to both the players and the mods. Everyone is here to play and have a good time. Treat other players the way that you would like to be treated, and everyone will get along just fine. In short, don't be a dick.
Original characters are not allowed in any form in this game, no matter the fandom. Characters need to exist in fandom in order to be played, and characters that are exceedingly minor or name-only characters are not allowed to be played. If you think this might apply to a character you wish to play, please contact the mods.
Stay true to the canon nature of your character. OOC portrayals are highly discouraged and blatant applications from applicants hoping to play in such a manner will be rejected by the mod team. While we are not familiar with each and every fandom out there, google is our friend and we will use it to our advantage and read up on your character's personality before we pass judgment on your application. This is an OU game, not an AU one. If characters become too OOC or too far removed from their canon, without reasonable in-game development, the player will be warned and possibly also removed.
Duplicates of characters, if the duplicates/alternates exist in canon - Present Claire and Future Claire from Heroes, for example - may both be applied for. On the subject of fandoms with multiple universes - Marvel or DC Comics, for example - only three versions of a character are allowed. For example if Tony Stark from 616, MCU, and Ultimates canon are all in play, you would not be allowed to apply for the Tony Stark from Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Players must have both jurassiccity and jurassiccityooc friended. It is strongly suggested that they have the other comms friended as well, but friending those two comms is mandatory. Similarly, players must have jurassiccitymod friended, as well.
Roll Calls and Activity Checks will be done as the mods' discretion, with the former happening roughly once a month and the latter in the event that activity becomes an issue. Activity Checks, if and when they happen, will be judged, for the most part, based on activity within the jurassiclog community. The specifics will vary and will be detailed in posts from the mods to the jurassiccity community. If a player misses a roll call, they must wait two weeks to reapply. Likewise, if the mods judge that a player is inactive to the point that a character must be removed, they must wait two weeks to reapply.
On the subject of activity, hiatuses should be used sparingly and should last no longer than two weeks, barring extenuating circumstances, which must be approved by the mods. If the mods feel like a player is abusing hiatuses, we will approach the player about this.
New characters must be introduced into the game within a week of being accepted. If a character is not introduced within that time frame, they will be removed, and the player must wait two weeks to reapply for the character. If extenuating circumstances would prevent a character being introduced in that time, either for IC or OOC reasons, please run them by the mods.
God-modding is strictly prohibited. Do not move another player's character unless you have direct permission from the player themselves - ie, a player goes on hiatus and gives permission to their character's love interest or best friend to move the character around when needed. God-modding without such permission will not be tolerated and will result in automatic removal from the game. Play fair and stick to your own muses.
Metagaming is not allowed. Under no circumstances can you let your character know something that happens outside their knowledge, unless they are omnipotent…in which case it’s not outside their knowledge. You'll ruin the irony. Also, same as you control your character alone, you control yourself and nobody else. Do not tell other players how to play their characters or who they should ship. You may think you’re being helpful, but they probably think you’re being an asshole. If this becomes a problem, the mods will talk to the player and possibly remove them.
At present, you may only play two major characters per fandom. This means that if you play Spike and Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you cannot pick up Xander Harris. However, you can pick up Charles Gunn, as he is from a different show. This does not mean you cannot pick up any of the minor characters, though we leave that up to mod discretion. If you have any questions about this rule, please do not hesitate to contact the mods. With larger fandoms like DC and Marvel, the limit is three, and with small fandoms, like Firefly, the limit is one.
Canon updating is allowed. This should be utilized infrequently, though, as having characters constantly shifting time points can be confusing not only for the character in question but those within the town. Try and stick to main plot points and important developments. If we think you're canon updating too frequently, the mods reserve the right to contact a player about updates.
PBs are a required element of this game. If you play a character from a comic/manga/cartoon/anime, we require that you select a PB to represent them. A PB is an actor/actress/model representation of a character that would otherwise be animated or sketched. Not using a PB can make other players uncomfortable during interactions. If you need help selecting a PB, the mods suggest checking out pb_updates, find_icons, and Hollow Art. There are, of course, some exceptions that can be made to this rule. wikicon's memories is also a good resource for icons. If you feel that your character should be, we suggest you speak with a mod prior to applying for this character or consider turning your character "human" to avoid difficulty with this. In addition, if your character has a double within their own fandom, we ask that you do your best to use icons of your chracter and not the other one, as this can lead to unnecessary confusion. Animated and text-only icons should be restricted to the OOC community.
Additionally, PBs should accurately reflect the racial and ethnic background of the character in question. White actors or actresses are not to be used for non-white characters, as this is incredibly problematic and offensive. Please be mindful when choosing a PB that you pick someone appropriate for the character in question. The mods reserve the right to ask players to change PBs if we feel this criteria has not been met.
In regards to series and films that have just premiered and don't already have an established solid canon to them (ie: film adaptations of novels), there is a two week wait period on being allowed to hold characters from a film from it's premiere date. For example, Jurassic World premieres in the US on June 12. Someone wanting to play a character from the film would have to wait until June 26 to send in an application for that character. This is done to prevent spoiling people who have not yet seen the movie. Television characters will be judged on a case by case basis, but on the whole we suggest waiting at least three episodes. Some characters will have enough established background earlier, and we will consider such characters if players have an adequate reasoning.
Drama of any kind will not be tolerated. We realize that drama is inevitable within games and is bound to rear its ugly head at some point, but we assure our players it will be dealt with in a swift and professional manner. If a player is caught spreading rumors, wanking, and encouraging other players to wank against their fellow players and/or the mods themselves, the player will be warned and possibly also removed. The mods would like to provide a fun, drama-free atmosphere for our players to game in. Drama is not welcomed in this gaming environment. While we encourage players to settle disputes amongst themselves, the mods are here to step in if needed. Please contact us if you need to and we will do our best to help you settle these issues.
In addition to the above rule, keep OOC issues in the OOC realm. In short, OOC =/= IC. Do not drag personal issues you have with a character's player into your interpretation of the character. For example, Anakin Skywalker would not hate Padmé Amidala just because his player doesn't like hers. The mods would like to remind the players that it is possible to game with someone's characters without having to interact with their player in the OOC venue. If you are not comfortable or mature enough to handle your characters interacting with the characters of a player you dislike, we suggest that you avoid playing those characters. If this becomes a problem, the mods reserve the right to speak to the player about the issue and, possibly, remove them.
Out of Character intolerence regarding race, gender, religion, political beliefs, or sexuality is NOT permitted. There is a ZERO TOLERANCE policy concerning this. ANYONE at ANY TIME will be removed immediately without question, argument, or even warning. End of story. This does not apply to characters who are ICly homophobic/racist/sexist/etc. This policy is strictly OOC only, but if we find out you are using your character as a mouthpiece through which to be an intolerant douchebag, we will remove you.
Mature themes, such as excessive violence and sexual content, are allowed within this game - however, the mods require that you clearly mark your post with a warning of such content to your fellow players and friends lock the post to the community it's being placed in, along with putting all content of that nature behind a cut. Also, because of these themes, players must be 18 or older to be a part of the game.
Pregnancies are allowed within semi-realistic limitations, with a minimum of four months that your character must carry the child. Exceptions will be made for characters of a species with different gestation periods and characters who enter the game already with child. Pregnancies should be cleared with the mods.
Incest will be allowed if and ONLY IF it appears in canon and will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
When playing your characters, keep in mind that IC actions do lead to IC consequences. If you don't wish for these consequences, don't have your character take actions that would lead to negative fallout.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated in any way, shape or form. This is serious business right here. If you are caught plagiarizing, even if you are already a member of the game, you will be removed and banned. We have a zero tolerance policy for this.
We require that you have AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) for this game, as that is the primary means of plotting and player communication for the game. If your AIM screenname is locked so that people not on your list are unable to contact you, you are required to add the mods and players (listed in the contact list) so that you are reachable.
We enjoy actually being able to read a person's post. We know it sounds crazy, but we do. We understand typos, and we ourselves can't spell to save our lives, but we do want some semblance of proper grammar and spelling. We’re not grammar Nazis, but we’re asking for at least an 85% accuracy. It shouldn't be that difficult. And please, for the love of god, at least spell your character’s name right, if nothing else. You would think that goes without saying, but we have actually encountered that issue before.
Challenge holds are allowed. However, if the mods discover that they are being done excessively/maliciously in order to spite another player, we will put a stop to them. For now, if you wish to challenge the hold of another player, both holders have 7 days from the date of the challenge to submit an application for the character in question. ALL CHALLENGE APPLICATIONS MUST INCLUDE A NEW WRITING SAMPLE FOR THE CHARACTER IN QUESTION. The sample must be a new sample and not a link to an old sample or thread. The applications will presented sans-OOC information to a panel of voters who will judge the personality and writing samples of both applications based on which interpretation of the character strikes them as the most in character. This is done to prevent a non-biased decision that is based on IC information and not who the applicant is. The application with most IC portrayal will have their character accepted. Also, please note that if a holder submits an application for a character before someone challenges their hold, that challenge is not valid.
If you drop from the game entirely (ie: leave the game, taking all your characters with you) three times, you will be banned from applying in the future. This does not pertain to regular drops where a few characters are dropped while still having others in play. Additionally, if your application for a character is rejected three times in a row, you will be banned from applying as that character.
Plot all you want. That's the joy of this game. We just ask that major major plot points, or anything that will affect the mass population, be cleared with the mods first. We're nice though, honest. If the plot you present to us is uber special or uber wicked and we like it very much, you might just get a cookie.
Please use the tags provided. They are up to date thanks to the hard work of the mods, so please remember to tag your entries. If you don’t, there will be blood...and we aren’t talking about the film. If, for some reason, there is no tag for your character, just let a mod know. We aren’t psychic, even if we sometimes play them, so we do need you to tell us these things.
Some characters from otherwise acceptable fandoms can be problematic or triggering (i.e. - Tate Langdon and Oliver Thredson from American Horror Story, Cassidy Casablancas from Veronica Mars, Alastair from Supernatural). The mods reserve the right to deny these characters and others like them as we see fit.
We do not allow characters from the works of Cassandra Claire, because of allegations that she profited from past plagiarism. We have a strong stance on plagiarism, and we don't want to support it in any form. We will make an exception for the Shadowhunters television show as there is enough difference between the show and the books.
Also, this is not a porn game and, as such, characters from Fifty Shades of Grey or other erotic novels will not allowed in the game.
Ultimately, we reserve the right to deny holds for any character for any reason if we feel they do not suit the game.
Allie and Ashe are the mods. That makes us the rulers of this game. What we say is final. If you don’t agree with it, that’s all fine and dandy, but the fact remains that there is a hierarchy of power within the game and we are on the top. So, what the mods say goes. Don’t argue it without good reason. Constructive criticism and suggestions are fine and, indeed, appreciated, but if you argue too much about things, it will not go well. The rules are there for a reason and the decisions we make are based on our best judgement for the good of the game. Really, we aren’t harsh dictators, but we cannot run this game effectively if our authority as mods is not recognized and respected.
New rules will be added at the mods' discretion as they see fit. The players will be notified in jurassiccity of any changes or additions to the rules. If you have any questions about the rules, please do not hesitate to comment here or to contact one of the mods. We will do our best to answer your questions as soon as possible.
